Numbness at night: The most common initial symptom of carpal tunnel is numbness and tingling in the thumb and first two fingers that is worse at night, often awakening you from sleep.  Especially if your symptoms have progressed to the point where the hand is weak, a neurologist can help determine if the cause is carpal tunnel or some other nerve disorder.

EMG: In these cases, a follow up EMG will objectify whether re-innervation and healing is occurring allowing decisions for further treatments.  A plain X-Ray will NOT assist in visualization of carpal tunnel pathology but an MRI might.  Discuss with your hand specialist

Varies: Some patients don't get full relief of symptoms. Associated joint pathology and chronic tendonitis can interfere with complete symptom relief of preoperative symptoms. Also open technique may get somewhat better results than endoscopic technique. However 90% success rate appears to be expected.

The third trimester is the worst, and ordinarily a safer time to inject the wrist if needed to provide short term relief.
