Timing: Pain after having a fusion depends on multiple items: such as how long it has been since your surgery, if the pain is at the donor site for the fusion, and if you had degeneration previously.  I would imagine this is related to a spinal fusion and you are continuing to have pain after your fusion healed.  If you had degeneration at other levels prior to surgery; this pain can be from those levels.

Short-recovery: I would imagine you are having an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion.  You will likely have a horizontal incision along your neck that usually heals well.  Often 1-2 nights in the hospital and walking the day after the operation.  If you have numbness or weakness in your hands, it usually is noticeably better after surgery.  Pain is usually controlled with oral analgesia.

Fusion attempts to bridge the two surfaces by using bone graft and other biomaterials. Once the surfaces heal together, there's no motion and this reduces pain.

A graft using ur own (autograft) or cadaver (allograft) 2 fill the space . Then a fixation plate ; screws or other means 2 keep pressure on the graft ; keep the now fused joint from motion until it is solid.
