Brain injury: With the cardiac arrest and even with immediate CPR and defibrillation, hypoxia brain injury can occur so the induced coma is to, try to reduce he damage and allow recovery.
But sometimes the brain activity will cause seizures
status epilepticus  - persistent unresponsive to meds sometimes.

Cardiac arrest: When you have cardiac arrest you are dead. Induced coma is done only when you are alive. As such it isn't a treatment for cardiac arrest. If a patient happens to be resuscitated from cardiac arrest, inducing coma can be a consideration to hope the brain will recover with less metabolic demand on it. It isn't done regularly. We are considering if cooling post arrest survival is as useful as thought

Poor prognosis: If they had no spontaneous circulation requiring CPR for &gt;15 minutes, the prognosis is very poor. There may be irreversible brain injury. The prognosis is not determined by the timing, however. It's determined by their condition. If there's no brainstem activity, there will likely be no recovery. IF they have higher cortical activity, recovery is likely, will be slow, and may be incomplete.

While there: Is always a risk of serious consequences when taking any prescriptive medication it is unlikely that you will experience any of those provided you don't have any of the contraindications to use of the drug.

No: Assuming the patient is on a respirator, breathing rate should be 10-12/min to start, then adjusted depending on the oxygen and carbon dioxide blood levels.

Can happen : A second stroke is possible after a first stroke.  The reasons for the stroke should be investigated to try to prevent new strokes (not always possible).  A medically induced coma is used to allow for rest and healing.

Depends on med used: That depends on the medicine that was used. Some are pretty short acting, and it doesn't take long for it to wear off. Other types of medicines can last longer. 

As far as septic shock, the shock is the body's reaction to the infection. Once the infection is treated, hopefully the shock will improve.

Absolutely NO!!: I hope this is not something you were thinking of trying on your own to someone you know who has a problem with seizures-- don't ever try to administer alcohol to someone who is having a true seizure--if someone is having a seizure, call 911 and let professionals treat them.

good day, i tested positive after my husband tested positive and admitted in hospital 14 days ago. i had only loss of sense of smell) i self isolated. close family wants to come and support as hubby is in an induced coma, do i retest or ?

If you are test negative on day 14, continue to maintain distance but you may have contact in the same room, six feet apart. All the best for his recovery.
