Tendon or kneecap: Either the patella is rubbing over the cartilage and snapping into place or more likely one of the tendons is snapping over an edge of bone when it tightens. This doesn't usually cause problems. Check with your doctor if you have pain.

Doctor can check: An orthopedic doctor or a sports medicine doctor can check to see why a knee would "give out" ("give out" has different meanings to different people, so one must describe the symptoms to the doctor in detail, and know what positions or motions make the knee worse or better). Sometimes there's some ligament or cartilage damage; other times it's just a sports "overuse" problem.

often when i bend down to do work, i.e gardening, and am squatting or on knees, when i stand back up i feel sort of like blacking out.  is that normal?

Common: That is not an uncommon occurrence especially if you stand up too quickly which doesn't give your circulation enough time to reach your brain. You may check for a drop in blood pressure from a sitting to standing position as a cause. Unless this is a pronounced drop, all you must do is to rise up slowly. If your blood pressure drops severely on standing up, see your MD for evaluation and advice.

Weak muscles: That maneuver requires strong musculature in your legs. If you have developed weakness of your thigh muscles, you will have to start an exercise program to build them up. Of course if chronic knee problems with associated pain is the problem, additional attention has to be paid to them regarding diagnosis and treatment which requires an examination by a physician or orthopedic specialist.

Common, not normal: Knees cracking and clicking (crepitus) when squaring down is a common condition, but not necessarily normal. Most commonly this crepitus is due to roughness to the cartilage behind the knee cap. Treatment involves maintaining range of motion, ice, anti-inflammatory medications, and knee strengthening exercises. Persistent pain should be evaluated by your doctor.

the inside of my left knee hurts whenever i have to squat down, or stand up from sitting. what could be going on? how do i fix it?

Medial knee pain: Can be a sign of inflammation, or possibly a strain of the ligament. Your specific complaints tend to be concerning for a meniscus injury. You are too young for significant arthritis symptoms. That being said many people can have medial knee pain for various reasons. Typically I would treat the symptoms with relative rest ICE and Nsaids and see if it gets better. If not have it evaluated.

i'm going to meps and i have bad knees, can't touch my butt to my heels, can't squat, and crackling in my knees. i'm worried i cant pass the physical.

Sometimes: The" shock absorber" of the knee may partially tear, generating pain when pivoting or bending.

Patellofemoral syndr: Patellofemoral syndrome common cause of popping (crepitus) in front of knee. Focus on retraining quadriceps muscles.

Knee: Could indicate cartilage damage. But of no pain or swelling i would not be to concerned.
