Herpetic lesions: Most often mouth sores are herpetic in origin, meaning they are full of viruses.  If you have these, consult your dds if they do not disappear within 4-7 days.  Sometimes these sores can migrate around your mouth or tongue, and become very uncomfortable.  Avoid acidic foods.  Ask your dds for a prescription rinse that might make them less painful.

Canker sores: Canker sores (aphthous ulcers) have no definitive cause. They are thought to be caused by stress, allergies, trauma, diet, etc. They are usually self-limiting, healing in 7-10 days, with no other symptoms other than topical pain.
Herpetic gingivostomatitis is due to a viral infection (herpes simplex virus). It often presents with symptoms of fever, headache, malaise. It usually heals in 7-14 days.

Two different things: Cankers (recurrent aphthous ulcers) are an "auto-immune" type reaction to trauma/stress (such as biting your lip). They occur on the loose membranes of your lips, cheeks and floor of the mouth.  Your dentist can treat with prednisone, laser or chemicals to cut pain. Cold sores are hsv. Abreva helps those some, but most need doc rx. Both go away without treatment in 10-14 days (pain only 3-5 days).

Canker sores: The best way to find out what is going on is to see a dentist  or oral,surgeon. They can tell you if it is just canker sores or herpes or something else.  We can't answer here you need an exam.

Yes: Bur that depends upon the other individuals with whom he has been in contact.  Does he go to daycare?  Has he had baby sitters, has anyone put their fingers in his mouth or kissed him on the lips?  Canker sores, however, generally appear somewhat differently than herpes ulcers and a pediatrician can often tell the difference.

Yes: You absolutely can have oral herpes. Except for the initial episode the location is always on the firmer or "attached" tissue, such as the roof of the mouth or areas close to the teeth. Often they appear at first as small circular lesions which expand and coalesce into a bigger lesion. Typically a response to increased stress of some kind - food,liquid,trauma, lack of sleep, being rundown, etc.

Common occurrence : Gingivostomatitis is the long name for a condition that results in a very sore mouth. It's caused by a viral infection( herpes simplex virus) and is common in children. The symptoms can be mild or severe. While it can be disconcerting to see sores in your toddler's mouth — and to know that she hurts — usually there's no cause for worry.Gingivostomatitis can also be caused by a coxsackie virus.

Possible: You can but it would be uncommon. It is not clear but usually oral herpes present as a blister formation. What you are describing sound more like canker sores.The cause of this is not clear but smoking, stress and viral causes have all been proposed. You can talk with your doctor for the best treatment especially if they are very painful 
Other causes have been implicated is hot foods.

i usually get cold sores on the outside of my mouth. usual clustered blister and they crust and fall off until healed. only recently i'm getting lots of gum& throat canker sores. i never had herpes there.is it true canker sores can be herpes simplex?

: No. Your canker sores are from stress, diet, possible trauma to area, and an acid build up in saliva from high sugary foods and liquids. Canker sores are treatable with OTC medications.
