What for?: Don't know why UR asking. Of course U can take any of these antibiotics for appropriate indications provided UR not allergic to any of them. There is cross reactivity between Doxycycline &amp; tetracycline, but not with erthromycin.

Syphilis treatment: Why not long-acting penicillin? It's the treatment or choice world-wide, unless severe penicillin allergy. Some syphilis is resistant to erythromycin and related drugs, very common throughout Europe. However, doxycycline is effective if taken reliably for 2 weeks (100 mg twice daily). Symptoms may take longer to clear up, however. If you remain uncertain, check back with your doctor.

would doxycycline be helpful in treating multiple styes in one eye? every doctor ive seen prescribes an erythromycin ointment, but it just contains the issue. at this point, both my top and bottom lid are swollen. and, im looking for any help.

ID specialist: A different antibiotic like doxycycline might or might not help, depending on whether the problem is an infection or a non-infectious problem; and if an infection, the particular bacteria involved. Consider asking for referral to an infectious diseases specialist for aid in interpreting culture results for various bacteria (if done) and selecting the best antibiotic.

Neither: Vantin (cefpodoxime) is a cephalosporin: not a penicillin, but somewhat related.  Doxycycline is a type of tetracycline, completely unrelated to both penicillins and macrolides (the class of drugs that Erythromycin belongs to).

Accepted Answer

Yes: As long as you are not allergic to them and avoid alcohol while taking metronidazole.  Also avoid spending too much time in the sun on doxycycline (usually not an issue in winter, but if you live in a tropical climate you could get a sunburn even if you have dark complexion). Everything in life has risks vs benefits.  The benefits of your meds are better than the risk of infection so I would take!
