A child with symptoms suggestive of a "stomach bug", meaning an infection with some sort of virus or bacteria that causes stomach symptoms, can happen from contact with surfaces, such as doorknobs, toys, and other people who don't look sick. Infections can also come from foods and drinks that contain the germs or the toxins produced by the germs.

The most common ways to catch the stomach flu are by touching contaminated surfaces or objects and having skin-to-skin or hand-to-hand contact with an infected person, although contaminated food and water may also be a source of illness. So wearing a mask is not effective in this instance.

: Maybe/not. Probiotics are just seed cultures of germs that ae known to "play nice" in the gut. If they establish a major presence in the gut they can crowd out germs and yeast that are sometimes linked with gut problems. They are useful during or after a course of antibiotics that may kill off well behaved germs in the gut. Otherwise their use may or may not be beneficial in the long term.

Possibly, yes: "Stomach bug" usually means viral gastroenteritis, and the most common cause is norovirus. Noro is extremely contagious:  just being in the same room with someone who vomits sometimes is enough to catch it, even if no direct contact. If somone with noro has cold symptoms, contact with nasal secretions probably could transmit it. OTOH, 24 hours is a bit soon:  symptoms usually begin 36-60 hours.

Gastroenteritis: Without knowing exactly what has caused your husband's symptoms it is difficult to advise. Would not kiss him, not come in contact with his secretions from any end of his GI tract and try to stay reasonably far away.  Not easy, but could be of many sources.
