I'd urge you not to: Most areas, especially those far away from bone, will not be that uncomfortable. There's are a variety of topical creams with Lidocaine or other 'caine products, ask your artist whether these are right. Acetaminophen is a good choice for an oral analgesic as it doesn't interfere with platelet function. You may find the sensations, even if not pleasant, make this meaningful experience even richer.

Wouldn't recommend: Although, technically that is possible, i wouldn't recommend it to be done at home.  Doctors use clean instruments and prep the skin with antibacterial agents to prevent the introduction of infection.  We also use numbing agents and stop any bleeding to make the whole process much more comfortable and safe.

Be careful: Any form of trauma to the skin (include getting a tattoo) can cause a keloid if you are keloid prone.  It is a hard question to answer.  A tattoo rarely causes keloids, but it is certainly possible.  Err on the side of caution.

Rephrase question: If i can rephrase your question- you are asking how to check skin cancer if your skin is full with tattoo? The answer is-- it would be difficult. Your dermatologist really have to look very carefully to see if there is anything suspicious. You have to pay attention to your own body, if you feel a growth or something not right -bring that up to your doctor.And, dont add anymore tattoo, if you can.
