i outgrew schizophrenia and don't have it anymore, does this mean i can enjoy a normal life now?

?: Schizophrenia is a chronic illness and variably progressive. Symptoms may fluctuate and treatment may eliminate many of the symptoms and slow progression. If you have no hallucinations, disorganized thought process, or paranoia without medication it is possible you were misdiagnosed. Many other possibilities. See a psychiatrist.

It can be good: If someone works with a psychiatrist, manages stress and takes medicines when needed a person can have a family, work regularly, and have those things we think of as "normal.".

Could be: Schizophrenia is a chronic illness that requires ongoing help.  Some symptoms are overtly psychotic -- like hallucinations and delusions.  Other symptoms involve poor motivation, flat affect, and difficulty connecting with others and making decisions.  All of these could affect your work.  I've known schizophrenic people who work well, with ongoing medical help.  Please see your psychiatrist.

Hello. : Hello.  One of what is classified as "negative" symptoms of schizophrenia is cognitive decline with each psychotic episode.   We are very blessed that atypical antipsychotics have come along because they can actually help with negative symptoms including cognitive decline.  Two and a half decades ago, when i was in training, there were no medications that impacted negative symptoms.  Now a person with well controlled schizoprhenia can actually have a pretty normal life.  Preventing the psychotic breaks, helps to prevent from cognitive decline.

Schizophrenia: Being schizophrenic is not a normal existence.  But if your fiance is taking his medications and working in treatment, his illness can get & stay in remission.  If not, his illness may interfere with his ability to relate to you, including sexually.  Also, sometimes the medications can interfere with libido as well.  You can encourage him to keep working with his doctors and therapists.

Predisposition.: At mimimum there would already be predisposition for the development of schizoprhenia.

Weird?  : Some people express symptoms or prodromal characteristics early in life.  Many, if not most, showed no symptoms.  The change in behavior is often what leads to diagnosis and treatment.

Brains: Yes. Of course.  The anatomy of the brain (which the MRI can examine) is not abnormal in schizophrenia.

: I would wonder more about mania at his age- as in manic depressive episode. Review manifestations this at uptodate.com to see if you can help guide him to what is going on.  Will cost some $ but you might save his life.

It is possible for: people w/schizophrenia marry and have good relationships, but like other disorders, it needs to be treated and it is a risk factor.  There are varying degrees of symptoms manifested when someone has schizophrenia and that needs to be considered also.  The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior.  Peace and good health.
