If you just want to hear the heart beat, likely anywhere in the left side, or carotid will provide a good sound.

The Telltale Heart: You may hear your heart's pulsations transmitted/conducted  from the soft tissues and vessels in your neck, but you won't be hearing what a stethoscope picks-up.With your head on your side, you are occluding the ear on that side,barring any outside noise or air movement to that ear.If it is reasonably quiet, the other ear won't be stimulated and the other ear will get magnified from within.Spooky!

: Abnormal heart sounds, or murmurs/rubs/gallops, are best heard and identified with a clinician's stethoscope and an echocardiogram. A chest x-ray and EKG are reassuring to rule out other things, however, does not fully evaluate the heart structure. Standing upright changes the blood flow to the heart, and minimally decreases blood pressure, which in turn decreases the turbulent flow.
