The theory is that bacteria from the infected tissues in the mouth can get into the bloodstream and be carried to pregnancy, and infect the bag of  waters or the placenta.  Good dental hygiene is crucial to a good pregnancy outcome!

Not really: Biotene is more for people with dry mouth. For perio patients who are non-smokers, i prefer listerine.   That said, it is an adjunct. There is no substitute for seeing your dentist to have the tartar buildup under the gum line removed. That really is the most important part.

You don't: You can't make that determination. Only your dentist can accurately diagnosis this. If the gingivitis has been going on long enough it will lead to periodontitis.
It is best to get it evaluated and treated so that it doesn't get worse.

Differences: Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gum only and has not progressed into gum, bone, and other attachment loss. It doesn't always progress into periodontitis. Periodontitis means the inflammation has progressed into the underlying structures and leads to bone, gum, and tooth loss.  Early prevention is the key. Having a comprehensive exam can determine how simple or involved treatment will be.

Usually many years: It usually takes 10 to 20 years but that can vary depending on things like personal dental hygiene, whether someone smokes, diet, personal immune system health, having diabetes, type of bacteria someone has in their mouth, and stress level.
