CHEST XRAY NEGATIVE: If PPD is positive, we do chest xray to rule out active tuberculosis and a person is cleared as not having active disease.But we recommend the parson should be treated prophylaxic with inh for nine months with pyridoxin.

Yes, immediately: If a family member just has a positive PPD then besides treating latent infection, looking for a source & contact investigation will be necessary. However, if they have active TB disease, then everyone they have been in contact with should get a PPD to determine if they got exposed to the TB bug or not. If PPD is positive then further testing (chest xray etc.) is needed. Talk to your doctor.

Exposure to infected: Tb spreads from person to person by transmission of TB bug in coughed out droplets that are inhaled by others. In poor living conditions, overcrowding leads to higher risk fo transmission of infection from one person to several others in their vicinity. Lack of access to health care, timely diagnosis & treatment also increases risk for transmission as infected person is contagious for longer times.
