Psychotherapy is an important part of this treatment, whether or not medications are necessary. Psychiatrist usually disagree with this idea.

No simple answer: Each episode of depression, especially if not treated to remission, increases the chance of getting another.  Through therapy, one can get coping skills that can diminish the chances of getting another episode by being better able to deal with stress. Genetics plays a role as well as life circumstances.  After 3 episodes, the apa recommends maintenance treatment.

There are many : Things  you can do to help your depression.  Don't isolate. Spend time w people. Having a support system is very important. Get out. Don’t allow yourself to stagnate at home.  Work to get at least 8 hours of sleep per night & eat as healthfully as possible.  Daily aerobic physical activity  is a big +.  Highly recommend the “feeling good book" by dr. David burns. Don't just read it - do it!

Primary care doctor: There are many signs that may suggest depression, such as:  feelings of sadness or hopelessness, angry outbursts or irritability, loss of interest in normal activities, sleep disturbances, tiredness or a lack of energy, either weight gain or weight loss due to appetite changes, anxiety or restlessness, slowed thinking, feeling worthless, etc...  Seeing one's primary care doctor is a good start.

how can i help my husband see he needs to get back on his depression meds?

Show him/ get help: Show him with specific examples how his medication has helped him and how he behaves with and without the medicine. Also ask him why he stopped. The side effects may be too much but he may be embarrassed by them unless you ask him straight out. Also ask his prescriber or therapist if he gives you permission to do so to help you help him. The prescriber may not even know he stopped his medicine.
