No risk, no worry: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) isn't so easily transmitted, and is never passed except by close in-person contact. Even kissing is low risk, unless vigorous or prolonged -- i.e. sexual kissing passes it, but a quick social kiss rarely does. For sure it is not transmitted by food, drinking glasses, eating utensils, etc. Don't worry about it.

i think my brother has herpes and he ordered food and i ate a piece he offered of his plate and the tip of my tongue began to hurt within 15 mins of eating it.it burned and the tip of it had raised bumps and are red. can i get herpes? that fast?

: No.  The incubation period for HSV infection (herpes) ranges from 2 days to 2 weeks.

Always there.: If you have an active lesion you can have spread to the genital region. If not active it is stil possible but less likely. Also the person that you are doing this with -what is his herpes status? All these factors come into play. Nothing however is for sure. The chances of spreading oral herpes virus to the genitals is much less than spreading genital herpes.

Herpes simplex: It is conceivable that this virus could be transmitted in this fashion but it almost always requires some direct contact. If you are the person coughing, there is no way that you would get this.

Herpes testing: The tricky thing about herpes, is that many people don't know they have it. Thus, if starting in a new relationship where you might be having unprotected sex, then it's a good idea for both partners to get tested. I would add an HIV test to that too, since there's 50,000 new cases of HIV in the US per year-and often spreads 'unknowingly'. Safe sex is recommended considering other STDs like warts.

Yes: Herpes is a sexually transmitted infection so yes it possible to catch it. There are two types of herpes. Type 1 is the cold/canker sore you see on the mouth. Type 2 is the genital type herpes. Apart from the vesicles that sprout up, there is no visual way to tell if someone has herpes. Remember that a flare up is not necessary for transmission.  Use condoms to reduce risk.

No: Lack of contact with someone who has herpes will keep you from getting herpes.

Nope: Herpes is rarely if ever transmitted by indirect contact like this -- only by direct contact with an infected person's infected body part, like kissing and sexual contact.
