It won't wait to make you miserable if you're a man (2-5 days), longer if a woman: up to a couple of weeks, unless it starts spreading further. But you should feel something after a while( discomfort, discharge, weird smell). Rarely it sneaks up into the bloodstream to cause fever, joint pains and a rash. but, dormant for a "couple of years?" No.

Gonorrhea: You should absolutely be treated for Gonorrhea. See your regular Dr for an exam, culture and prescription for antibiotics or shot. The disease when caught early is easily treatable and recovery is within 1-2 weeks. Use a condom during the treatment period and until your Dr states that you are cured.
