Pack early!: It is best to get organized and have your bag ready a few weeks before your due date, so that when labor truly starts, you can just grab it and go.  In it, make sure you have your camera, cell phone, insurance information, any essential toiletries you want to bring.  Most importantly, make sure you know when and how to contact your OB at all times, and how to get to the hospital!

Pain meds & fetus: The answer is yes for narcotic medications. All of them will get into the babies circulation and make him/her drowsy or floppy at birth, occasionally requiring breathing resuscitation. The epidural form of anesthesia does not have a direct affect on baby's tone or consciousness, but is associated with maternal low blood pressure and delay in the 2nd stage of labor. So they all have some affect.

Talk and proceed: Anesthesiologist is going to talk to you, and will continue to talk throughout the procedure. You will be in a sitting position and your back will be cleaned and the draped. Local anesthetic will be placed to numb the site of the epidural (the worst bit). Then an epidural needle will be placed (pressure). Needle used to place an epidural catheter to give medicine to decrease pain.

Varies widely : Judging from your previous questions today it appears that you have not yet had your baby. It also appears that you are very concerned about vaginal lacerations. I would discuss these fears with your obgyn. Discuss your options for anxiety and pain control. Together you can work out a plan to help make having a baby an enjoyable experience.

Epidural: For labor pain epidural is better because you can push when time comes for delivery. Spinal is usually done when you are getting a caeserian section where you dont need to push.

When was U/S done?: If an ultrasound scan was done early during the pregnancy, around 8-11 weeks gestation, then the ultrasound's estimate of the due date should be pretty accurate. Babies are usually not born on their estimated due dates, as many are born before that date, and some after that date. If august 6 was the due date, then conception was around november 14.

Rather unlikely: Spinocerebellar ataxia is a hereditary condition which is not affected either positively or adversely by pregnancy, labor or delivery, or even breast feeding.

when i get ultrasound or doppler at the hospital in labor/delivery e.r. my baby goes nuts in my belly. why? can he feel it vibrating or maybe hear it?

Sound: Imagine if you were in a pool of water and someone put a waterproof speaker up to the pool's edge.  Definitely the babies react to the sound of the doppler, but, i don't think there's any evidence that they respond to the vibrations of the sound waves like a dolphin, the waves are just too far apart for that.  That's great though!  the nurses don't have to use an acoustic stimulator !

having intermittent intense pain around stomach area, down my sides and underneath ribs almost labor like,  a burning feeling to it also. i feel bloated bowel movement didn't ease pain. had an episode like this a few months ago. what could this be?

Stomach pain: Intense upper abdominal pain has various causes such as acute gastritis(inflammation of the stomach lining), pylorospasm, pancreatitis,gall stone or gall bladder inflammation, peptic ulcer or gastric ulcer. Look for triggers like fatty or spicy foods, alcohol, excessive caffeine.Medications. Get examined during an episode so that appropriate testing can be done.
