Local anesthetic will be placed to numb the site of the epidural (the worst bit). Then an epidural needle will be placed (pressure). Pain Relief!: Your back will be cleansed & made numb with surface anesthesia, you'll feel mild pressure when the epidural medication and catheter are put in place, & your relief will take effect gradually over 10-20 minutes. The procedure will be explained in greater detail during early labor. Your OB may be able to put you in touch with an anesthesia provider within her/his practice locally. Have fun!
