Talk and proceed: Anesthesiologist is going to talk to you, and will continue to talk throughout the procedure. You will be in a sitting position and your back will be cleaned and the draped. Local anesthetic will be placed to numb the site of the epidural (the worst bit). Then an epidural needle will be placed (pressure). Needle used to place an epidural catheter to give medicine to decrease pain.

Pain Relief!: Your back will be cleansed & made numb with surface anesthesia, you'll feel mild pressure when the epidural medication and catheter are put in place, & your relief will take effect gradually over 10-20 minutes. The procedure will be explained in greater detail during early labor. Your OB may be able to put you in touch with an anesthesia provider within her/his practice locally. Have fun!
