Easily transmitted: Genital warts are caused by hpv virus.  If you have visible genital warts, then in all likelihood, you have exposed recent partners to the strains of hpv virus that caused them in the first place (or your partner to you!).  Most of us, though, by virtue of being human beings who are sexually active, have already been exposed to many strains of the hpv virus.  Talk to your doctor about treatment!

: You have lots of questions, but I  think I  understand the underlying one. HPV  can reactivate after years of lying dormant. Things like stress or irritation of the genital can reactivate an infection. If treated previously with removal of the warts, no way anyone can get every last piece of HPV material. So yes, 4 years later, you can be infected by someone who has not been with anyone else.

Viral contamination: Possibly you could contract herpes or warts in this manner - especially if the towel was used by an infected person.  Would you use a dirty towel?

Real life: Everybody has a few strains of HPV. Some cause common warts. Some cause genital warts. Some cause genital cancers. The good news is that surveillance keeps precancers manageable and benign warts are easily removed. There are other diseases that are hard to treat. Your friend would do well to put on his brave face and get those problem warts lasered off like a he-man. Best wishes.

: Usually they clear up before a year. But why not see a doctor to a) confirm the diagnosis and b) get them treated?

: Both questions are reasonable and if the "genital warts" persist they need to be evaluated by a physician through physical exam and possible biopsy if suspicious.

: There has been little or no research to answer the first question. And yes, not all genital bumps are warts. And some experts believe that wart tissue might be replaced by scar tissue. In that case, the bump may remain but it's no longer an active wart. It't best to have them treated, which usually is effective in getting rid of warts entirely.

: When and if warts go away depends on the interplay of your immune system and the virulence of the virus. So no one can predict when they will go away. wish you luck
