can you be allergic to your own tears?

Unlikely: Typically a person develops an allergic response to an airborne allergen that contacts the moist surface of the eyes.  While the tears contain multiple proteins that are cytokines, mediators, and inhibitors, a person does not become allergic to these substances.  It's the pollen, dander, mold, etc that is the allergic trigger.

Very unlikely: It is very unlikely that you are allergic to your own tear. If you already have other skin rashes in the facial area, tears can irritate the rashes and make them worse but it is not an allergic reaction.

Accepted Answer

: Short answer: yes.  The tear duct is a long tube that goes from the inner eyelids down to the bottom of the nose to an area called the inferior meatus.  Anything that causes the nose to be congested can also cause the tear duct to swell, too.  This is why patients with allergic rhinitis oftentimes will tear up.

can non dissolvable stitches be used to repair vaginal tear after child birth if i'm allergic to dissolvable stitches?

Yes: Yes, your ob/gyn could definitely use non-dissolvable stitches that then have to be removed in his/her office later.  Maybe you won't tear, that would be the best solution!

how long until corneal swelling goes away ?  due to allergic reaction to artificial tears

Accepted Answer

Artificial tears: Do not cause damage to your corneas.  If your eyedrops contain other medications (e.g. Those that relieve eye redness) then you could have ocular surface problems.  Regardless, you should stop the drops you are using and typically your symptoms should improve in a few days.  If they persistn, then you should see your ophthalmologist to see if stronger medication is needed.

i'm allergic to artificial tears and now my eyelids are red and swollen and feel heavy and my eyes are blurry how can i cure it ?

Change tears: There are many brands of artificial tears and a good first step is to try an alternate  brand.  Allergy to artificial tears is extraordinarily rare.  You might also try an anti-allergic otc drop like ophcon-a  (available as house brand in most pharmacies).  Only if this fails do you need to consult with your ophthalmologist.  Steroids are a later use drop when others fail.

from last 15 days ,initially had some sort of allergic swelling in eyes which is fine now. but running nose now, sneezing,tears in eyes , mostly early in the morning or at night, and difficulty sleeping. this is for my wife.

Allergic reaction: It sounds like something in or near your bed is causing an allergic reaction in your wife. Discuss with her any changes that have been made to the area including pets, new bedding, sheets, soaps or fragrances. Have her take a daily non drowsy antihistamine such as loratadine, cetirizine or fexofenadine (all available without a prescription).

37 and allergic to mom's dachshund. eyes are tearing, red and itch. nose is runny and sneezing. hate benadryl, (diphenhydramine) is 25mg hydrox-zine ok?

Sure.: Yes, hydroxyzine is fine, but it's fairly similar to Benadryl (diphenhydramine). You may prefer Zyrtec, Allegra or Claritin, as they won't make you as drowsy. Alaway and Zaditor are two OTC eyedrops that are fast acting and could help as well. You can even take both the eyedrops and Zyrtec, Allegra or Claritin. Hope this helps.

have  allergic rhinitis now partially blocked tear duct .had ct scan at my request normal except nasal and sinus inflammation does r/o tumor in duct?

Needs special view: with thinner cuts / high resolution study, and ask in the request that a mass is suspected in the tear ducts, but what makes you suspect such diagnosis? please confer with your opthalmologist/ otolaryngologist for evaluation, best wishes

Not sure: Unfortunately no one can give an answer as to why one develops an allergy to any allergen. At the most basic level, for some reason, one now sees an innocuous substance as an allergen.
