can high dose cefelexin (1.5 g/day for a year) cause kidney problems or any other complications/side effects? my dr wants to start me on this for recurrent kidney infections but i just want to better understand the risks first?

: This is unusual treatment for recurrent or persistent urinary tract infection, but may be appropriate if your doctor has a good understanding of the nature of the infection and best treatment. It would be appropriate to see an infectious diseases specialist (or in UK, a genitourinary medicine [GUM] physician) if you haven't yet done so. Cephalexin has few side effects, kidney damage unlikely.

Hopefully not: However repeated kidney infections that aren't properly managed can affect kidney function, also the reason why you are having recurrent episodes should be investigated, and that warrants seeing a nephrologist, you may want to discuss with your primary doctor, wish you well

Not normal, but.....: It may be expected if you have chronic infection or due to stone disease. Make sure your urinalysis is normal. Discuss with your doc if you need to see a nephrologist who has interest in managing stone disease. His job will be to prevent increasing stone disease burden and to make sure your parathyroid (not thyroid) is not hyperactive. Urologist is the only one who can remove stones if needed.

Possible: Is the brain intact?
If arrest and no cpr, that may be the limiting organ.
Kidney failure may recover, pneumonia may clear with tracheostomy and antibiotics.
Baseline function is also relevant for recovery.

Lipase elevations: Can come from different causes, two of which are pancreas and kidney problems.  Usually, very high lipase levels along with elevated amylase levels are seen in acute pancreatitis, whereas lipase elevations in kidney diseases are not that high.  Pancreatitis can show on ct scan, and kidney problems, can elevate BUN and creatinine levels.  Ask your dr about specific advice.

Usually not: There is a condition called neurofibromatosis associated with cafe au lait spots.  These spots are large, more than 1 cm in diameter, flat, painless, numbering more than 5 on the body.  Patients can develop blockages of the kidney arteries.  This causes severe hypertension.  If you have kidney failure you can develop nodularis prurigo, severe itchy lumps that darken after time.

Scan Dye Can: Scan dyes used for contrast can cause kidney damage called stress induced nephropathy 
it is more common in patients who already suffer from some kidney dysfunction like elevated creatinine level
but most of time kidney function returns to normal within couple of weeks but in some patients with kidney disease it can be permanent and can lead to end stage kidney failure, and rarely death.
