my son who is 14 is lifting weights and wants to take a protein shake, like muscle milk, will this be beneficial or harm him?

Accepted Answer

Muscle building: As long as he is not overweight this should not harm him. If it will enhance his self-image to take these shakes and perhaps make him exercise more, so much the better. Too many kids these days do no exercise. Encourage him to not only weight lift but to do anaerobic exercises and stretching and to perhaps join a team in some energetic sport (soccer would be great). No: There are no benefits to any of the protein drinks over a healthy nutritious diet.  You need to be careful that there are not other supplements in these drinks as these nutritional products are not regulates.  Amino acids, stimulants and testosterone derivatives are potentially dangerous.

Yes: They are beneficial for people involved in a lot of physical activity however too much of it can cause kidney damage by increasing the workload of kidney which can damage the kidney in people with borderline disease and dehydration.

: If your TSH is high, and if your FT4 is low, you need to be on levothyroxine replacement, or a higher dose if you are already taking it.  In the meantime, there is no problem with handling dairy protein.

im on a diet with high protein to lose fat and gain muscle, my diet is 2000 calories per day and only consists of: protein shakes, milk, flaxseeds, chicken breast, broccoli, brussel sprouts, green beans, egg, pasta. am i missing any vitamins?

: No. Your diet covers all of the vitamins and essential trace nutrients.
You will need to exercise to gain muscle, diet alone will not do it. A combination of aerobic exercise and resistance exercising/weight training will be needed to improve your muscle mass. The amount of gain will also be determined by your genetic make-up.

Some protein : is reportedly more bioavailable and is used as a supplement around the time of exercise where as other types of proteins just milk protein may take more breakdown time. This is used as the rationale for taking supplements. When trying to build muscle. However. Bottom line. Well balanced good nutrition is good       Nutrition no matter how often. And the science  has support in several directions

Meat and Whey Supp: Meats, beans, eggs, dairy, and whey protein supplements are the best ways to get higher overall protein intake in your diet.  You can also take bcaa's after your workouts, which will help build muscle.  Lastly, make sure you eat 5-6 small meals each day, not 2-3 large meals...This makes a world of difference...As you actually use for the macronutrients, versus excreting them and/or gaining fat.
