can a ct scan without contrast dye rule out causes of a secondary cough headache?

CT without contrast: Will show whether there is hydrocephalus ("water on the brain"), fluid collections around the brain, and large mass lesions (tumors). The vast majority of head ct's for headache are normal in patients with headache as their sole symptom and i believe this test is vastly overused in the usa (for a myriad of reasons).

increased urine output? i did have a ct scan of my chest yesterday, i heard that the dye can cause increase urine the day after.  is this true?

We'll sort of: the older X-ray dyes or contrast media were hypertonic and did cause a dieresis. Urine output would go up. The newer nonionic media might cause a slight increase. It is still advised to drink water afterward to flush those hardworking kidneys

No, that: would be a very unusual reaction.  Transient tremors may be more likely related to anxiety.

Can be small: It can be very small and still cause symptoms if it is in the right location.  CT without contrast might or might not show anything.  Best imaging test is MRI with contrast.

Enhancement: Contrast helps the MRI study by determining if there is any abnormal contrast accumulation called "enhancement". Enhancement can occur in the presence of infection, inflammation, and tumors. The contrast is very safe in patients who have normally functioning kidneys. So, contrast helps the MRI give maximum information.

Many possibilities: That symptom is very common and could be associated with many things. It appears that you don't have an enlarged thyroid gland or other mass because of the ct, making cancer unlikely. It can be related to acid reflux(gerd) and  laryngopharyngeal reflux(lpr). Some people require mo's of  twice daily reflux meds to help. Another issue can be muscle tension dysphonia, so see an ent/laryngologist.

60-90 minutes: Usually about 60 to 90 minutes. May take longer if slow bowel transit.

It varies: Milder reactions include itching, hives, nasal stuffiness, watery eyes or mild mouth/tongue swelling.  More serious reactions can occur and can even include anaphylaxis, the most serious of allergic reactions that can be life-threatening.  People who have a known allergy are often pretreated with steroids to prevent reactions.  All radiologists and techs are trained to treat contrast reactions.

Very safe: Assuming you are not allergic to the dye and do not have kidney problems, the dye is safe. People with dye allergies often are allergic to shellfish, or have a history of asthma. They will question you before they give you the injection.

Accepted Answer

Various Flavors: The oral ct contrast is a dilute barium suspension which can have different flavors depending on the manufacturer. There could be banana, orange, etc.
