Age of mother, prenatal care, size and number of babies, uterine shape, maternal smoking or drugs, previous cervical cone biopsy and  maternal infection  are the most common.

Yes: Ultrasound machines are invaluable in managing pregnancy today, especially high-risk pregnancies.  Not only do we measure the baby's size (head, abdomen, thigh bone), but we can evaluate all of the internal organs, from brain to bladder.  We also can make sure the house is in order -- evaluating the placenta and the amniotic fluid quality, even measuring the cervical length.

Looking at shadows: An ultrasound is a way to use a sonar probe evaluate a two dimensional field.For multiple pregnancies its like counting potatoes moving around in a sack , only seeing one direction at a time. Unless you can find something distinctive about one of the potatoes, it would be easy to under/over count the total number this way.With 8 not all would be visible @ 1 time.

More info: If the brain structure is normal, don't do anything. Wait until the child is born. Dolichocephaly is a head shape description, and nothing more. It does not necessarily indicate a medical problem needing treatment.

how accurate on baby weight is ultrasound? when i had my babies, there was nothing like this, but my daughter (grandbaby on the way) had hers she said they could tell the weight.  really?  how accurate is this?  just want a big healthy grandbaby!

Yes, : Yes, the baby's weight is estimated on every pregnancy ultrasound. The ultrasound technologist measures the head width, head circumference, abdominal circumference, femur length, and occasionally other measurements. These measurements are then entered into a formula which calculates the estimated fetal weight. This formula and estimation are based on population averages and is therefore subject to normal variation. The estimated fetal weight is quite accurate early on during pregnancy, and less accurate as the pregnancy progresses. At full term, the actual fetal weight can vary by more than 1 pound. The estimated fetal weight is useful to the obstetrician in order to indicate whether or not baby is growing appropriately.

Depends on variables: There are spaces within the developing brain where fluid is supposed to be.The size & shape of these spaces is sometimes visible depending on the type of study sensitivity of the probe used. If the fluid collection is excessive, the feature will be monitored. Many will require treatment after delivery and some before. Each case is managed based on individual features.

: Your post is confusing. I would suppose a scalp US can look inside a bruise or other projection on the skull to identify the underlying structure. Cranial ultrasounds are a common way to evaluate the internal waterworks of the brain using the open "soft spot" as an entry point. Someone might use the terms interchangeably but I have never heard of any study labeled that way.

Confirm: I am sorry to hear about your situation.  Make sure to confirm that there is no heartbeat by another ultrasound, especially before you have the D&amp;C performed.  Just to be on the safe side.
