Listen to your body!: You really need to listen to your body's urges for defecation, and not try to stifle them.  (holding on until you reach a toilet is a different matter.)  over-controlling the urge to defecate can lead to dry, hard stools and constipation -- including all that comes with it (hemorrhoids, fissures, pain, rectal bleeding, etc).  Please allow your bowel its needs.

Avoid incontinence: The colon's primary function is absorption of water (mostly right colon) & storage of solid waste (mostly left colon). Continence of stool relies primarily on rectal tone & sensation. An inflammed colon or one that is too active may result in diarrhea, whereas a sluggish colon may contribute to constipation. Fecal incontinence reflects rectal/anal disturbance (see my earlier healthtap entries).

Yes: Majority of the time you will be able to have bowel movements after colostomy. Rarely their might be a surgical issue that may decrease your bowel movements due to nerve impairment. It is also common to have some constipation after surgery due to anesthesia. If you do have constipation for a long time after surgery, consult your physician to get to the underlying cause.

Concerning: This is a concerning symptom the should be evaluated promptly.  It could be related to multiple causes but most concerning would be a spinal cord issue.  In these cases loss of bladder control is commonly present as well.  Have this evaluated soon.

It : It sounds like you are dealing with acid reflux. Your stomach is producing excess acid after eating. Typically this happens after eating spicy foods, acidic foods, caffeine, and chocolate, but could occur after eating anything. There are more serious issues that could be occuring (i.e. Stomach ulcer). Therefore you need to see your doctor for a medical work up, testing, and treatment. In the meantime you can try over the counter Pepcid (famotidine) or prilosec.

: Your oral contraceptive pill is absorbed long before it could reach the colon and thus will be unaffected by bowel movement patterns.

my son had surgery for hirschsprung after birth, he's 4 now and having trouble control his bowel movement when passing wind. is this normal?

Accepted Answer

Always possible: Hirschsprung can be short and long segment.  If a large amount of colin had to be removed then it may be hard for your son to control gas and solids or semi formed stool.  You may need to contact his surgeon and peds gi.  A plan of action to help make stool more solid could help.  4year olds often have bowel control problems do it may be normal.

how long does it take for birth control to be absorbed? i started my new pack and had a bowel movement that was half solid and some of it was loose about an hour and a half later, would that compromise protection or no?
