Tapering off meds: I would consult with a psychiatrist/addiction specialist who can provide a specific plan for tapering off those medications as well as determine for you specifically whether it would be recommended to do so within the course of a month. It can be rather uncomfortable to come off those medications if the taper is done too quickly.

2 directions.: You are asking for medications which may assist symptoms, but it is far more important to determine underlying cause, and treat that.  Neuropathy may be caused from multiple reasons, and a neurologist who has some experience and understanding needs to be sought.  Sometimes, vitamins help, sometimes IVIG may be answer.  Lyrica (pregabalin) merely blunts the symptoms.

Depends on diagnosis: Amitriptyline (elavil (amitriptyline) for brand name) is an anti-neuropathic medicine.  It is an old generation anti-depressant.  Neurontin (gabapentin) is also an anti-neuropathic medicine.  Neurontin is also an anti-seizure type medicine.  Patients with chronic nerve pain have different reactions to anti-neuropathics.  Neurontin seems to have more specificity toward nerve pain.

How well?: I don't see that hair loss is a major side effect of Neurontin, (gabapentin) but to be technical the best way to know for sure is to stop it and see if the hair loss stops.  BUT, I wouldn't do this without consulting with the prescribing doctor, and hair regrowth could take many months so may be hard to tell anyway.

i'm taking amitryptyline, neurontin (gabapentin) and naproxen for severe back pain and spasms. is it safe to take methocarbamol as well?

Yes: watch for sedation though. Don't drive until you know how sleepy you will get with the combination of Neurontin (gabapentin) and methocarbimal. ( assuming you take the amitryptyline at bedtime.

Neurontin/hand pain : There are many reasons for hand pain. If there is suspected nerve problems causing the pain, Neurontin (gabapentin) may help. Swelling will not be helped and Neurontin (gabapentin) can actually cause swelling in the hands, legs and feet in some people.
