Need Evaluation: You must get this checked sooner rather than later, especially if your bladder is involved.
You could have another disc from a different level or scarring from the previous surgery.

Need more info: Tell us for how long have you had sciatica? Was it brought out due to trauma or lifting weight? Has there been any imaging studies of the spine(X-Ray or MRI) done so far?
Are you taking any pain medicine and how much does it help?
Once we know all of the above you can advice you if you can be treated with pain medicine and PT or you may need consultation from a surgeon if there is a disc prolapse.

To some degree: If her sciatica is due to bulging discs in the back or a hereditary subtype of arthritis, then it is more likely to run in families. That being said, it is a complex disease with multiple interacting factors, and genetics plays only one part.
