Root Canal: If the rct was uneventful then the sensitive gums are most probably due to recession of the tissue exposing root surface that can be very sensitive. If it feels like pressure is building up or the gum tissue under the rct tooth is sensitive to biting or touch then you need to see the treating dentist to evaluate the issue.

Inflammed or infect: Inflammation can be just that (red, swollen, tender to touch, warm). And will heal with time. Or there could be abnormal pressure from adjacent tissue/structure or infection. Check with the dentist.

Absolutely: Root canals are done with a dental dam in place. The dam is kept in place by a sharp clamp that sometimes digs into the gums. This is not unusual. Additionally, the anesthetic used for a root canal can sometimes cause a severe bruise at the injection site.

Yes... and No: Yes, you can have receding gingiva in just one tooth. And it will not cause an infection since bacteria have not entered the pulp chamber. Can trauma cause the nerve to become non-vital? Yes. Can recession make the tooth become so sensitive that root canal therapy is necessary? Sometimes. Your dentist needs to examine all of these possibilities.

It : It wasn't mentioned if you have symptoms, e.g. Severe pain, why  a root canal was recommended. Assuming the tooth is healthy, if you are my patient, i will use my laser to do gum reduction (gingivectomy) after application of a strong topical anesthetic, provided it won't violate the biologic width (which is within 3mm), to access and restore the small cavity. In case there is already a pulpal involvement, (e.g. A narrow opening but  deep enough to communicate to the pulp), a root canal has to be done. I will recommend implant vs. Bridge to preserve the bone integrity, easier flossing, and capacity to chew hard foods without traumatizing the abutments where the pontic (floating crown) has to be connected.

The success and longevity of this treatment will depend on a number of factors including your occlusion (if the bite is balanced), oral hygiene, habits, and diet.

A few days: Once the abscess is drained, most symptoms go away quickly, within a few days. If the abscess is still in the gums, your dentist may suggest that you rinse with warm salt water a few times a day or you may need antibiotics to help fighting infection. Regardless, the abscess will not be cured unless the cause is completely eliminated.

Seek a second opinio: There are always alternatives to most medical problems. I would suggest that you see another good dentist recommended by one of your friends and only if two of them agree that you need removal of your tooth, would i go along with them. Even then you can always seek an alternative treatment and try saving your tooth.

i need a root canal on top tooth. one of the premolars( 3rd or 5 tooth from the middle). i hate injections in my mouth. i can handle usual injection in jaw or gum line but i'm wondering if i'll need a hard palate injection. what determines the need?

: For root canal you only need the local injection (into the gum), no need for nerve root injection.
