barking cough untreated by asthma, allergy, and gerd meds. only prednisone clears it up. it effects my life greatly and no one can fix this. help!

Poss spasmodic croup: Depending on how frequently these episodes occur, and in association with what triggers, you could have spasmodic croup.  Spasmodic croup is alleviated by prednisone.  If the cough is more persistent, and refractory, you should have a workup to determine the etiology.  Smoking is probably not helping, so i would try quitting that first and foremost.

i was given 150 mg oral prednisone daily for 4 days then 80 for 2 days for hives.weight 122 lb.got side effects almost passed out ended up in er. since then having gi distress and severe heartburn. is this a really high dose ?

Yes: That is an unusually high dose of prednisone. Typical doses are in the range of 1 mg/kg, in your case about 50 mg for few days followed by a taper. In conditions that need higher doses a more potent steroid is used. Talk to your treating provider about your symptoms and further recommendations.

had allergic reaction to minocycline. hives, heartburn, chills, feeling ill. took prednisone/benadryl. hives gone for 4 days, why am i still itchy?

Inflammation: !st drug such as minocycline tends to linger on in the tissue longer. 2nd the inflammation triggered by the drug takes 1-2 weeks to resolve even after the drug has been discontinued. Think of it as a deep scratch on your skin, it won't heal immediately just because you have stopped scratching it.

is normal to experience heartburn/ minor chest pain when tapering down off prednisone?

Gastritis: prednisone is famous for causing gastritis and stomach ulceration. I suggest calling your treating physician and getting a PPI medication to inhibit stomach acid production ( Nexium (esomeprazole) or Prilsoec ) - low dose versions of these medicines are sold OTC.

Prednisone: or any cortisone derivative medication has upper gastrointestinal effects and heartburn, upper GI pain are common. Omeprazole is NOT and ACUTE  treatment thus unless you take it regularly it may not help! An H-2 Blocker (eg: PEPCID (famotidine) AC) may offer sopme protective value as will TAKING THE PERDNISONE WITH MILK!!!!

Many possibilities: You may have peptic ulcer disease, esophageal hernia, medication induced gastritis, or one of a dozen other diagnoses.  See a GI doctor and have this worked out well.  Hope you are feeling better soon.  You don't need more problems.

The doctor can help: Prednisone's goal is to suppress the immune system, in order to decrease or stop inflammation. However, that allows microorganisms like yeast, bacteria, or fungi to grow more easily - meaning one can get oral thrush from the mouth and throat, down into the esophagus (must get medicine). Prednisone also weakens the stomach lining, so acid disease and stomach ulcers can form (must get treated, too).

Studies have shown: That the differential diagnosis of heartburn symptoms is quite broad, but according to Dr. Harmon and others in Therapeutic Advances in Gastroenterology,  there are five major causes:
Medications, functional dyspepsia, GERD, peptic ulcer disease, and cancer.

Timing : How are you taking the omeprazole? It should be taken on an empty stomach with nothing to eat or drink for at least 30 minutes after. If you aren't taking it this way that can reduce to the effectiveness. Otherwise, you may need to see your doctor or a gastroenterologist.
