None: There have been no reported long-term side effects from use of zyrtec (cetirizine) in a trial involving toddlers and children with eczema, who were treated with zyrtec (cetirizine) for for years daily, and then there was an extension out to six years of total treatment.

Good choice: Zyrtec is a good choice to help alleviate allergy symptoms. Other antihistamines such as claritin, allergra, and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) may help as well.

i have 3 cats i'm allergic to.  i also have outdoor allergies.  zyrtec (cetirizine) isn't working this spring.  what can i do. also no insurance.

Get rid of cats: I hate to tell patients to get rid of their pets, but if you are allergic to cats and have 3 of them, it may be time to find them another home. On another note...If you have been on zyrtec for awhile, try switching to Allegra to see if that helps more. Generally i would also recommend an allergy nose spray like nasonex, (mometasone) but that may be more of an issue without insurance coverage.

is it safe to take 2 10mg zyrtec (cetirizine) a day in the case that my allergic reaction is worsening as the 1st dose is wearing off? otherwise, what would be my best option?

Other options: If by allergic reaction you are referring to allergic rhinitis (hay fever) then you might want to think about adding additional meds to regimen to help control symptoms better. Nasal saline rinses, steroid nasal sprays, and various other OTC preparations can help alleviate allergies in conjunction with Zyrtec. See an allergist for further testing to determine sensitivities.

had allergic reaction to insectbites multiple occasions. lots of swelling with fluid bad itching. zyrtec helped a lot swelling went away fast also itching. how long can i keep taking the zyrtec?

: It would be worthwhile to consult an allergist to determine which insects are the culprit &amp; whether desensitization could help you. I don't see any problem taking zyrtec indefinitely.

Maybe, maybe not: These are both antihistamines, just different generation, zyrtec being the younger one. Being allergic to Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is not necessarily meant allergic to zyrtec as well. At times, people misunderstand intolerance vs allergic--people are more often intolerant than allergic. If symptom is mild, she can try zyrtec. If severe, i would consult doc first for eval. Allergy to benadryl (diphenhydramine): If you had such a severe reaction years ago to benadryl, (diphenhydramine) you should be under the care of an allergist to help protect you, from other allergy attacks that could be severe.  It may be that you reacted to something that was in the Benadryl (diphenhydramine) rather than Benadryl (diphenhydramine) itself.

72 hrs: Although some allergists consider Zyrtec to have a 7-day effect, a few studies have shown that a 72-hour wait is sufficient for skin testing purpose.  Since you took the drug just a few hours shy of the 72 hrs, it is likely ok especially if you had a good histamine response in the skin test.

Accepted Answer

Yes: The basic side effect of adding 1 or 2 of the 25 mg  benadryl would be sedation. I would not give more than that at one time but it could be repeated in 6 hrs if needed. If the reaction included any difficulty breathing/wheezing or other worrisome symptoms I would have her seen in the ER.
