Possibly: But not necessarily.  Mass lesions suspicious of malignancy may be detectable by ct scanning, but proof of the nature of the suspicious area must be by biopsy and pathology.  The best approach here would be to follow up with your gynecologist and have a determination as to the reason for low estrogen and to perhaps disprove your suspicion of cancer.

Little if any: Excessive radiation has some risk to induce cancer  many years down the road. But what you have had is called Medical use of X-rays which is considered safe. Unless you exceed 20+ CT cans, there should not be any such concern.

Rarely: The cancer would have to be quite large to show up on a pelvic ct scan.  A colonoscopy is a much better test for colorectal cancer.  Some centers are using a special kind of ct scan called "ct colonography" to dected colorectal cancer.

Not usually one: Radiation dose from ct is about 100 times chest x-ray. However the exact number of scans to induce cancer is not precisely known.If ct is necessary for diagnosis it is very accurate tool. Most institutions have reduced amount of exposure in recent years. If same diagnosis can be made with mr or ultrasound, non ionizing radiation, they should be chosen.Certain medical problems ct is necessary.

my husband has prostate cancer that has metastasized to his pelvic nodes.  his recent ct with contrast suggested a 17mm sclerotic focus in the posteri?

Your question is: incomplete...the "sclerotic focus" may suggest bone spread of the prostate Cancer. There is specific life extending treatment for this cancer and you should be discussing the alternatives witha Board Certified ONCOLOGIST  Hope this helps

: It is common knowledge that x-ray studies such as regular x-ray films or CT scans do put out a bit of radiation, and that radiation does not noticeably increase "one particular person's risk of cancer", when added to the radiation risks for cancer she already experiences just by living on planet Earth. The chance of cancer before and after one CT scan are the same. Doctors can't tell a difference.

Prob not any higher: The risk of cancer from the radiation exposure from the CT scans is not high. We should always limit unnecessary procedures, but if your doctor recommends a scan, usually it is because he/she feels that the potential benefits outweigh the risks.  Please don't worry. Accepted Answer

Not to worry: While we hate to order ct's mainly because of the radiation, one ct should not effect any risk of cancer for you now or in the future. To put it in perspective, over the course of a year, you'll get that much radiation exposure anyway and there's not risk from that.

i'm a 28 year old female that has had right sided pelvic pain for a few months. i have had two clear ultrasounds and a clear ct scan with contrast. can right sided pelvic pain be a symptom of colon cancer? or any idea on what may be causing the pain?

Right pelvic pain: Have  other GI signs ?, nausea /vomiting? diarrhea? blood in stool? Able to eat? May be GI - gallbladder,   diverticulum ( meckels- but that is  associated with bleeding) ,  CT would note appendicitis and  i assume  kidney stones were considered .  But   I have seen women w/pelvic pain w/vaginal culture  of  ureoplasma/ mycoplasma  and responded to docycycline / or azithromycin f/u /MD

can a ct with contrast of abdomen and pelvis detect colon cancer?

Accepted Answer

Depends: If you mean a regular ct with contrast (and not a virtual colonoscopy), the answer is occasionally.  If the cancer is spread, you may see enlarged nodes or metastases.  If not spread, you could conceivably see obstruction or changes in the bowel wall but it would likely be a big tumor nonetheless.  A ct is not a screening test and is not the way to diagnose early colon cancer.
