: Although that could help some, please check in with your doctor. Antiviral oral medications and oral medications for discomfort can work faster and bring faster and longer term relief for this what I am guessing a very uncomfortable situation. Telemedicine can get this relief in your hands very quickly.

i started on meds a day ago for back shingles. i have 2.5% lidocaine & 2.5% prilocaine in a lotion. can i use this on my sores/ rash on my back for pain relief? if so do i apply it directly on the rash sores?

: Some lidocaine patches have been FDA approved for shingles pain . They are worn for only 8-12 hours to prevent toxicity of Lidocaine which can have cardiac effects, would not use for more than 12 hours/ day total and only 2 patches maximum.   Since lidocaine lotions are not approved I cannot comment on them. Follow up with MD

what other treatments are available or effective for postherpetic neuralgia if lyrica and gabapentin isn't helping?  it has been about three months since my mom had shingles outbreak.  we have tried lidocaine and different oil/cream remedies.  thanks

Excellent medication: so far; however, post herpetic neuralgia is difficult to treat. Addition of very low dose  antidepressants ( amitriptyline (12.5-25 mg) or short 6-12 day course of tapered steroids (dosepack of Medrol). At best, this is a difficult therapeutic issue. Please call your treating physician.
