doc prescribed me klonopin (clonazepam) 1mg, once daily for anxiety. can i cut these pills in half and try a smaller dose? i'd prefer the smallest effective dose.

You could, but: You need to ask your doctor if this is okay with him/her.  Some people might use .5mg bid if needed.  Also, hopefully this will be a temporary medication for you -- and you're also getting a further assessment for your anxiety?  With a psychiatrist and/or psychologist or other psychotherapist?  There are excellent non-drug treatments for anxiety, not usually provided by primary care.  Be well.

Benzos.  Best not.: I agree with you. You need off this addictive medication.  You need a new doctor. 

You may get good benefit from finding an addiction psychiatrist who will have all of the options available for you to get you safely off of this medication.

Klonopin (clonazepam) effects: Clonazepam is in a group of drugs called benzodiazepines . Clonazepam affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause anxiety. It is also used to treat seizures. or panic attacks.
The sedative effects of clonazepam may last longer in older adults. Accidental falls are common in elderly patients who take benzodiazepines. Use caution to avoid falling or accidental injury .

Klonopin (clonazepam): The elimination half-life of Klonopin (clonazepam) is 18-50 hours.  Since it takes 5 of these half-lives to eliminate the substance from your system, this would be 5 x 50 = 250 hours or a little more than 10 days at the latest.   Faster metabolism could eliminate the medication closer to the shorter estimation point.  We don't know about your own system, though.  Best wishes.

Bad idea: Although Klonopin (clonazepam) is one of the more slow acting benzodiazepines, the effectives declines with time. Taking two at a time will be more potent but the effect on anxiety will decline and you will have periods of anxiety. Please take your medication as prescribed.

Your Doc ; the DEA: In the us, xanax (alprazolam) and Klonopin are known as "controlled substances" - in this case because of concerns about their safety and potential for abuse. Doctors need to be registered with the drug enforcement administration in order to prescribe them ; because of safety/abuse concerns, the dea monitors their prescription. Aside from this, long term use of xanax (alprazolam) ; Klonopin has serious risks.

i need to taper off klonopin been on it for years currently on .5 morning and . 5 evening i just have to get off safely.. i discontinued seeing prescribing doctor. and he is of no help. please help me get off it safely . i need some help. thank?

: If you can break the pill in half, you can start with 1/2 tablet in the morning and 1 tablet at night for one week, then 1/2 tablet twice a day for 1-2 weeks, then 1/2 tablet at night for 1-2 weeks then 1/2 tablet, three nights a week then take it as needed then quit. So it will take more than one month so it is safe and if you can tolerate. You can take 1/2 tablet as needed any time. Good luck.

: Go to drugs.com ad look up exactly the one you are taking and any other meds u r taking into their interaction checker. The Dr who has seen you will be able to add your ethnicity which you did not share.
