Yes: It is estimated that 85-90% of kids will be resistant to chickenpox after their first dose. Those who develop wild disease after that dose are protected by partial immunity from the major side effects. Hospitalizations have declined dramaticly & deaths from complications have dropped from 50/yr to essentially zero.

Some basics: The chickenpox vaccine is a weakened living strain of chickenpox designed to trigger the same antibody response as wild chickenpox without active disease. There is a lower but existing risk of vaccine related zoster from that weakened strain because it behaves like other strain of the virus. The newer Shingrex vaccine would be a reasonable investment at some point. Discuss with your doc.

Varivax efficacy: The effectiveness of varicella vaccine varies in individuals. If you only had one vaccine you may not have full immunity to it and if you get the chicken pox after the vaccine it may be atypical in presentation and rashes. It may not be as wide spread as the usual chicken pox in unvaccinated people.

Test specificity: The test can be run to where they can identify the different type of herpes, such as herpes zoster, hsv 1 & 2, varicella, etc.

Unlikely: The vaccine should protect you from contracting chickenpox.  If you never have chickenpox, you cannot get shingles.

Some basics: About 5-15% of kids given the MMR &amp; V will have fever 39.4c or higher 6-12 days after the vaccine. It is not unexpected or particularly worrisome as it indicated a reaction by the immune system. Any fever that occurs prior to this interval may represent an illness to which the child was exposed that has finally emerged. I would handle the fever with supportive care &amp; report the reaction to her doc

Generally, : Generally, if a child has already had the chicken pox, then he does not need the varicella vaccine.  Usually, having the disease once is sufficient for immunity against future infections.  However, the school may be suggesting vaccination after lost records because it won't hurt him to receive an extra vaccination.  The center for disease control recommends that if the immunization status of a child is unknown, the safest thing is to vaccinate them since extra vaccinations will not cause any harm.

There is a blood test available that can check whether he has immunity from his previous infections which is another option to consider.  Many health providers, however, will opt to vaccinate since giving the vaccine will not hurt and is cheaper than the blood test.  Good luck!

Yes : The vaccine is considered 85-90% effective in preventing chickenpox with a single dose in childhood & 95+ effective with 2 doses. The frequency of death or hospitalization during chickenpox drops considerably after one dose.

Maybe,maybe not: You may have had it & never knew it or had it called something else. If that't too much hassle i would just get it.Chickenpox can be nasty in adults.

Rare: If you develop a rash after vaccination with Zostavax (Zoster Vaccine Live) it is best to cover the rash until the lesions have crusted over. The same virus causes shingles and chickenpox (Varicella Zoster). Zostavax contains weakened chickenpox virus. It would be possible (but rare) to infect someone who has never had chickenpox and who has a weak immune system.
