MRI should: easily visualize a large tumor, but very small mucosal lesions may only be visualized endoscopically.  So the answer is...sometimes.

Yes: Mri provides better soft tissue detail than ct, particularly if the ct was performed without contrast, and could demonstrate a tumor not seen on ct.

i had a mri w/o contract of my entire spine and brain. a spinal sprinx was found. they want to do a mri with contrast to find the cause. i don't want contrast. is it absolutely necessary to use contrast to see spinal tumors?

: Yes, MRI with contrast is indicated for the different diagnosis of the spinal lesion. Unless you have advanced chronic kidney disease, contrast used for MRI does not cause any significant long term side effect.

does a normal non contrast mri (for epilepsy assessment) rule out all tumors and other pathology / neoplasms? what is the accuracy in detecting a tumor? still worried that tumor was missed, mri contrast prescribe hosp. only did non contrast!?

100% ruled out: You are going to see any tumors in the Central Nervous System (CNS) with a non-contact MRI. Only reason to add on contrast is to assess vasculature and for things related to the vascular system such as small aneurysms.  Tumors are not more easily found by using contrast . Put your mind at ease - you don't have a brain tumor. If still concerned about specific issues,  see neurologist...

my son had a transphenoid pituitary tumor resection in 2021 and just had a fu mri. i need help deciphering the results. it says: interval increase in size of soft tissue component extending along the superior lateral margin of the r cavernous sinus?

: The cavernous sinus is next to the pituitary gland so the finding could be the residual change post pituitary tumor resection. If your son is asymptomatic and this MRI is just a routine procedure then I am not concerned about it. If he has new symptom(s) then the neurosurgeon will go over the finding with you for plan of care. Good luck.

i have had progressively worsening blurry/ double vision, one sided tinnitus and a spaced out feeling for one year. brain and orbits mri with contrast was clear. ophthalmology report clear. could i still have a brain tumor?

Cardiac evaluation : Please see your physician for a Cardiology evaluation. An EKG and chest X-ray may be indicated.Avoid sugary foods and have basic metabolic screening blood work.

would a brain mri with and without contrast show any tumor of the sinuses and orbit? my mri says it is clear, but i am still worried as i ma having odd symptoms. my eye exam and sinus ct do not show anything?

No, of course not: There will always be something too small to be seen by any type of machine.  However, when things are too small to be seen, nobody knows what happens to those things over time.  As the machines and the scientific research improves over time, we will know more.

Contrast dye: Without contrast dye, some issues especially vascular related problems can be less clear on MRI scans.  If your doctor requested it, i would get the scan performed.

Whi MRI in first pal: You need to tell us about your general condition as to why was the MRI done in the first place? Contrast is often used but it only enhances to show a lesion better. Most serious abnormalities will show up on MRI even without the use of contrast.  Yet if your symptoms persist, a repeat MRI with Contrast may be necessary. What was your main symptom to do a MRI???
