i am obese and have a fatty liver with all my liver enzymes being wnl for ast/alt/ alk p. can i still use marijuana daily? there are alot of evidence saying its safe and helps prevent liver damage; however, there are other studies saying otherwis?

doc thoughts on these liver numbers? sgot(ast) 41 ul in july , 400 ul in dec. and sgpt (alt) 79 in july 1000 in dec. no pain no signs of liver disease, all seems well. may go for ultrasound. active marijuana user but no alcohol. drinks lot of water?

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, it may be due to an intercurrent viral infection. It would be prudent to repeat the tests in 3-4 months. If overweight, lose weight.     Wish you good health!

i just got blood work done and noticed my bilirubin and alt level were slightly elevated. alt 48u/l  & bilirubin, total 1.9mg/dl. should i be concerned my this and what should i do to reduce it?

: Not necessarily a problem at this point, but you could ask about Gilbert's syndrome.  If you drink alcohol or use recreational drugs, one or the other may affect liver function, and could be stopped for 60 days, and blood studies repeated.  Discuss all of this with the doctor who ordered the blood studies.  No urgent action needed currently but glad you are proactive.

U R seriously sick: I see you are an 18 year old male taking "provigil", a stimulant prescribed for sleep apnea and narcolepsy and used illicitly to promote wakefulness. It can poison your liver and you need to talk with your physician about this. The fact that you've gotten fat in 3 months is very worrisome. Your doctor must rule hepatitis, hemochromatosis, wilson's, fatty liver and more in or out.

: you probably have a condition known as Gilbert’s syndrome which causes a mild elevation in bilirubin when you are dehydrated .  It is an inherited condition when your liver produces bilirubin and is usually discovered accidentally when routine blood work is done.
It requires no treatment and is of no major concern.

Elevated bilirubin can be caused by hepatitis or obstruction of biliary tract. Hepatitis is needs to be further evaluated to determine the etiology.

Congenital: Gilbert's syndrome is a congenital, life long condition that might get worse in certain condition such as infections or dehydration and may cause jaundice and or fatigue. Otherwise, benign condition with no need for specific treatment.
