Bloody urine: Interstitial cystitis is a chronic inflammation of the lining of the bladder. The cause is not well understood (although it's most likely not an infection) and it can be difficult to treat. About a third of patients will have blood in their urine. This is not typically referred to as a "bloody discharge, " however.

No typically: Intersitial cystitis is a bladder problem related to pain from the lining of the bladder.  Ic is not associated with a discharge.  If you are having pelvic pain and a vaginal discharge, then an infection is likely and you should be seen and evaluated.

Accepted Answer

Possibly yes: Any process that leads to inflammation in the bladder may worsen symptoms in a patient with interstitial cystitis.  Even patients without interstital cystitis may experience bladder spasms that require treatment.  There are treatments that may be offered depending on a patient's individual situation.  It is imprtant to make sure that the symptoms are not due to infection.

Not likely: I am not aware of any correlation between hpv and interstitial cystitis.

IC causing UTI: Usually no; although the symptoms of an acute "flare" of ic can mimic those of a uti, and some of the treatments for utis (eg nitrofurantoin/macrobid/......) have been implicated in causing/aggrevating ic in pts with known disease.

Breakdown in GAG: There is a breakdown in the gag layer of the bladder. Gag stands for glucoseaminoglycan and it is a  microscopic layer that is supposed to help with protection of the mucous layer of the bladder. There is a lot of research going into this area and there is a significant connection between interstitial cystitis and endometriosis.  Right now we are managing the symptoms as best we can. No cure yet!

IC cause: There is a lack of a protective coat in the bladder that exposes the nerve fibers in the bladder to the urinary irritants.It seems that there is a deficit in an antiresorptive substance that maintains the integrity of this coat in the bladder tissue.

: Over a third of patients with interstitial cystitis have an elevated ANA of at least 1/40 according to one study of 96 patients.  This certainly suggests the possibility of autoimmune process at least in some patients who may also have associated Sjogren's syndrome.

IVF and IC: Someone I know went through IVF and had no increase in IC flare ups.  Everyone is different and everyone will have their own unique experience.  Best of luck.
