why would an immunologist put me on bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) for a whole year? should i take probiotic with them? i am 53 years old and have low beta globulin.

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) : Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) has been used for prevention of urinary tract infections. This approach is being used less these days for several reasons. Treatment for a whole year seems surprising even if your immunoglobulins (gamma globulin) are low. If you have had lots of certain infections maybe he want to prevent more. But the likelihood of getting resistance is high with chronic use of most antibiotics. Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) has been used and proven beneficial for prevention of pneumocystis pneumonia. Many immunologists might use antibiotic at the first sign of infection. Ask him/her what the evidence is for this therapy, its pros and cons. Nothing wrong with taking a probiotic with this.

how long should i spread out taking bactrim and a probiotic like florstor ?

: Timing does not matter. Probiotics are just seed colonies that liver in the gut without causing health problems. Most are encapsulated to aid transfer past the stomach acid into the gut where they take root &amp; multiply. The presence or absence of Bactrim at the same or different times will have the same effect in the long term.

should i be eating yogurt while on bactrim? the yogurt i like has the probiotics s. thermophilus and l. bulgaricus?

: It will not interfere with Bactrim to eat yogurt.

uti wont go away. taken bactrim, then cipro, (ciprofloxacin) symptoms persist. doc is doing urine culture. do you think probiotic or d-mannose would help me?

May help, also try: D-mannose is safe & effective for the 90% of uti's caused by e.Coli bacteria, so if you have a UTI caused by an e. Coli strain that is resistant to Bactrim & Cipro (ciprofloxacin) it will help. 
It is wise to take probiotics to restore normal GI flora during & after taking antibiotics but it will not help your uti. You can try herbs like uva ursi & andrographis while awaiting culture results.

AIDS: I am sorry to hear that your diagnosis also came with a badly damaged immune system.  Know that in general the Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is only temporary as your immune function normalizes on treatment.  I would only advise that you take the pro-biotics at a time different than when you take the bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim).

i have had to take bactrim ds for a week and i have heard you can easily get steven-johnson syndrome after taking it. how likely is that to occur?

Very rarely: This can happen but not "easily". As a guess, under one person in 10,000 to 100,000 people treated with bactrim get S-J syndrome.

: Unless you have a known allergy to sulfa drugs this is a safe medication for those with asthma.

can you take bactrim ds and zpack together?

Accepted Answer

Yes and why?: There are no interactions with these medications.  The Bactrim is commonly used for Staph infections or urinary tract infections.  The Azithromycin is used for pneumonia - though it is not uncommon that the person actually has a viral bronchitis.  It is not so common to have two true infections simultaneously. : No known drug-drug interactions between Bactrim and Omeprazole, side effects to each drug still apply, take meds as prescribed, let your prescribers know about meds and supplements you are already taking.

i got keflex 500mg and bactrim ds 800-160mg, pharmacist said to take them together with food but ive read to take 1/2 hour apart which do i do?
