Not advised: You should not take an extra dose of any once a day medication. In this case see your allergist or primary doctor to decide what medication(s) you can take, in addition to or instead of what you are taking now.

i took a generic allergy medicine at 11am this morning containing loratadine but it has not helped. could i take a zyrtec (cetirizine) now or should i just wait?

Yes: As long as you are aware of possible side effects of Zyrtec (cetirizine) and that these may be magnified after taking the loratidine, you might find it works faster.  If otc antihistamines are not adequately controlling your allergy symptoms, or you need to use them daily to do so, then see an Allergist for an evaluation.  There are treatment strategies to bring lasting relief!

Multiple: Zyrtec is an oral antihistamine for allergies. Many people will also use a nasal spray to help with runny nose, nasal itching, and congestion at the same time. The other oral medication that is often given at the same time is singulair (montelukast).

Yes: For non-sedating AH, you can take up to 4x a day.

Singular: Adding zyrtec or Another nasal steroid to antihistamine or nasal steroid that you already have will not improve symptoms.Adding singular may help but after Flonase likely will improve only minimally.Likely will need to see Allergist to get tested to what is causing Allergies is the option that is best.

Don't over do it: Yes, as long as you follow the label and prescription directions.

Tolerance develops: A tolerance to zyrtec may have developed.  Switching to Allegra or Claritin (loratadine) for a while may help.  Once those stop working going back to zyrtec may work.

No: They don't interact, good that you asked, always exercise caution with multiple medications, if you are in doubt, use two methods of birth control, as condoms in addition, good luck

Cold symptoms: Are you sure it is a cold not allergies? Zyrtec (cetirizine) will not alleviate cold symptoms. A decongestant containing medication will help.

Yes, but why??: There are no bad interactions between zyrtec (cetirizine) and melatonin. They are safe to use together.  The bigger question is why daily melatonin.  I imagine it has to do with poor sleep initiation patterns, but without knowing more, i would talk to his pediatrician about its use.  A usual safe dose for a 4 y/o is 3 or 5 mg at bedtime, but as important is bedtime routine, decreased stimulation, etc.
