Check amount : Make sure the supplements offer unique vitamins and minerals. Most hair skin and nails formulas have the same vitamins as any good quality multivitamin. You don't want to take in excess amounts of vitamin A, E or B as they may be toxic. It's always best to obtain your nutrients from a food source that is unprocessed. If each supplement is unique then be make sure to take with a meal.

It depends,safe,why?: Poorly absorbed forms of magnesium like mag. Oxide interfere with iron absorption whereas water-soluble forms like mag. Aspartate may not interfere- see http://www.Ncbi.Nlm.Nih.Gov/pubmed/8024640
it's safe to take together but might be prudent to take 2 hours apart. 
But iron deficiency is rare in men, even in men with anemia. I advise against men taking iron unless you're sure you're deficient.

i take a multi vitamin with iron and magnesium. i recently have been taking half the amount of magnesium as i was and my stool is darker and harder to come out. is this from the cut down on magnesium? i had an endoscopy and colonoscopy done 3 yr ago?

: People with low magnesium tend to be more constipated. Lowering your magnesium may have made your stools darker and harder due to constipation.

Hard to know: If you have had a deficiency of one of these vitamins or minerals, your symptoms should gradually improve- hair/nails will take a while because of slow growth.
If taking for general health, it is certainly tricky to know because the goal is to not develop a condition. So, if you don't develop a condition, is it because the supplement helped or if you wouldn't have got it anyway.   Good luck!

if i have low creatine (kidney level) 1.15 doctor said it low is it safe for me to take magnesium citrate? also can i take an iron supplement with low kidney level? i got a semi low number for mch. thank you! :?

: Low creatinine numbers do not mean reduced kidney function. As kidneys begin to deteriorate, the creatinine actually goes up. If your GFR is over 60, you can take magnesium safely. Iron supplementation can be pursued if there is clear evidence of iron deficiency. An isolated abnormal mch is not a diagnosis of iron deficiency. Please speak with your doctor to discuss next steps based on your labs.

is it safe and beneficial to take 1 daily tablet of multivitamin (containing royal jelly, ginseng, vitamins b,ce & k in addition to magnesium, iron, zinc , selenium, copper and iodine) for a healthy adult my age?

Controversial: Not clear that one requires a menu of supplements if consuming a standard balanced American diet.  This is so contentious that it is possible to find a plethora of opinions online, and hard to say how to proceed.  Your multivitamin may or may not be safe, and may not even contain listed amounts of supplements.  A good source is "Consumer's Reports" where this has been studied.

might a magnesium deficiency cause your body to hoard iron?

Accepted Answer

No it does not.: Only 50% of people get the daily requirement of iron. I take 250mg of magnesium per day. This does not affect serum iron or its absorption!
