Not iodine deficient: Hi. No one in America is iodine deficient. If you're hypothyroid, it's because of autoimmune destruction of the gland (assuming you haven't had thyroid surgery). Giving more iodine when you're already replete will not help. Is that TSH on l-thyroxine? You need a dose increase if it is. Take your l-thyroxine, and don't worry about the iodine. Good luck!

Yes: These meds are not iodine but thyroid products, if you will, that assist and make it possible for you to have normal  metabolic function with an under active thyroid (not making enough on its own).

dear sir. i have hypothyroidism and i take 100mcg of levothyroxine everyday. 
please tell me can i take iodine supplement, if i can how?

Why?: If your Family Doc diagnosed you w/hypothyroidism and prescribed Levothyroxine, then you shouldn't need anything else, assuming that 100mcg is right dose for you. Only way to find out is to check your TSH every 6wks or so until you get several values in same range. If you still suffer from hypothyroidism despite 100mcg, tell your doc and get higher dose, not iodine supplement.

im asking on behalf of my mother who has an under active thyroid. she takes levothyroxine and she wishes to take multivitamins for her health. i wanted to ask what vitamins are beneficial and which ones are not recommended as iodine is not ideal ?

None unless deficien: Many studies have looked at whether there is overall benefit for people who take multivitamins and those who don't, and the answer is no benefit (but also mostly no harm).  The best treatment is a good diet with lots of vegetables and fruits.   If someone has a particular disease or condition in which they do not absorb nutrients normally, or eats a very restricted diet, then a multi-vit is useful

Iodine radiation: Iodine radiation can be given to destroy the thyroid gland for problems with the gland.
    Usually throid hormone replacement  is necessary to maintain health.  Levothyroxine is one of the thyroid medications that can be given to maintain health and sustain life.

No need to: Taking iodized salt will not have any adverse  effect. Your thyroid probably still makes some thyroxine and needs iodine.

my doctor says my t3 (liothyronine) and t4 levels are okay but the tsh levels are still off, what are the causes? i am taking .088 levothyroxine daily (from .150 to .112 to current dose)
10 + years ago had a radio-active iodine procedure.

This : This means you need an adjustment in your dose of levothyroxine. If your TSH is up still, you need an increase your T4 dose. Your pituitary gland that makes the TSH is not getting enough T4 and T3 (liothyronine) to be happy even if those are in the "normal" range.

Why take it?: If you are on synthroid (thyroxine), (thyroxine) you likely are being treated for hypothyroidism.  The most common cause in your age group is hashimoto's thyroiditis.  Taking iodine makes this condition worse, not better.  By the way, synthroid (thyroxine) already contains iodine molecules.

BAD IDEA: Iodine deficiency is rarely a cause of hypothyroidism in the usa, because there is more than sufficient iodine in our diet. The ingestion of excess iodine will not help your treatment, but it may , in fact, create unpleasant side effects.

i take 75 synthroid (thyroxine) after a thyroidectomy.  would an iodine supplement help?   how would i know if i were iodine deficient?

Iodine not needed: The primary organ that uses iodine is the thyroid. If your thyroid is removed, then an iodine supplement will not be of use.  In addition, there is a lot of iodine in a normal diet.  It is very hard to become iodine deficient in all but a handful of remote regions of the world.
