Congestion: Most causes of congestion in children usually has a viral origin.Therefore, I would use salt water nose drops several times a day and use a vaporizer during sleeping hours.Antibiotics would  not be indicated

Not wise: You need to discuss this with both of your physicians. You only need one of those antibiotics possibly rather than both. Have to be certain what you were treating the antibiotics. What did the culture show?

Not necessarily: But repeat antibiotics can affect your gut and immune system. Be sure you take probiotics (not at same time as antibiotic). I would also add chinese medicine and acupuncture to your treatment plan ANS it can help reduce antibiotic issues and balance your body which helps speed recovery.

Yes: Usually the treatment length is 10 days of vancomycin or Flagyl but sometime may be longer.

why do doctors make you take antibiotics even after the sickness is gone?

Not all the way gone: You may be feeling better, but the bacteria are still in your system.  Your immune system is on the rebound (you feel better) but you are not yet 100% better.  Finish the antibiotics so you will be 100% better.

Take as directed: All antibiotics are prescribed with the intent that they will be taken as directed by the doctor. The amount and frequency varies and if you are instructed to take 3 times a day for 7 days then that is what you should do. Always listen to your doctor, they know what is best.

Get a second opinion: I'm assuming you mean bronchitis, which is usually a viral illness. Since viruses aren't treated with antibiotics, you may want to ask your doctor what bacterial infection he or she is trying to treat with augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate). Consider getting a second opinion if you aren't satisfied with the answer.

hi doc!  i've had tonsillitis for 3/4 days now. started antibiotics yesterday.  how long will these take to work? and how long does tonsillitis last?

Depends.: Tonsillitis is often not bacterial. When it is bacterial it responds in a few days for certain.  When it is viral it may not get better for 4-5 days. Maybe your doc did a culture or rapid strep test?
