i was prescribed vitamin d and have been taking vitamin d2 50,000 iu for 4 months. i found out today that it contains titanium dioxide. i understand this ingredient could be cancer causing. should i stop taking this supplement?

: If you have a white fur coat it causes cancer as in rats. Ask what the Vit d is for and what is the evidence that taking vitamin D in your condition makes one healthier.

Micronutrient Test: The best way to know if you need vitamins, minerals, etc. is to do a Micronutrient Test.  Spectracell Lab in Texas has an excellent one.  The results are given in clear language and suggest supplements or food for any deficiencies found.  Peace and good health.

Not sure what you: mean by K2 -- K2 is an illegal drug that is synthetic marijuana.  Do you mean Potassium (K) or vitamin K? You don't need vitamin K unless you don't eat any green leafy vegetables at all for a very long time. Both are safe : Both are safe however some people do not convert D2 to D3 , so be sure to have your vitamin D levels checked to make sure they are rising if you take D2.  Take with meals for best absorption.

Days but months to: see response. I have seem many do poorly on D2, including D3 concentrations going down. 20-25% of the population do not convert D2 to D3 well. Thus would avoid in favor of D3. Read: http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/84/4/694.full, a relevent discussion. The D- vitamins are derivatives of cholesterol. Intake &amp; absorption are low on a low fat diet, thus avoid. Desirable D3 conc. in the 70 range.

Nothing,but change D: This is not harmful- you would need to take it daily for weeks to become toxic. But i advise you stop d2 & change to d3 (available at health food stores) 5000 units/day & tell your doctor, because recent research suggests that whereas vit d3 is very helpful, d2 may be quite dangerous!

my dr. has put me on 50, 000 units of vitamin d2-1 per week.  is it okay for me to continue taking my caltrate 600+d soft chews? i take 2 of those a day which would be an additional 800 vitamin d3 per day.

You : You probably could for the calcium but should't need the extra vit d in it. If you take 2 extra strength Tums (calcium carbonate) that'll get you nearly as much calcium without the extra vit d.

Who prescribed?: It would be prudent to talk to the doctor who prescribed these. In general vitamin D3 is better than D2. You can safely take about 4000 units of vitamin D3 daily. Taking B12 orally may not work if you cannot absorb it. If you are prescribed 5000 mcg/day that is far more than you need. Let me reiterate, talk to your doctor, if you do not have a rapport with him/her, see a new doctor.Wish you good health! - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

Low levels?: You may want to ask the doctor who prescribed the vitamin, but i usually prescribe vit d when a patients blood levels are below the low end of the normal range.  Low vit d levels are common in some parts of the country and in some people who don't get a lot of sun.  We are getting better at preventing skin cancer, but we may have to supplement d in exchange.

Your physician: There are a variety of conditions for which Vit D supplements are recommended, from simple deficiency to osteoporosis prevention. You should understand clearly from your treating physician what is the condition being addressed. The dose prescribed by the pharmacist appear to be in a weekly/ monthly range as opposed to the dose prescribed by your doc.
