Can't pass stool: If you have a strong urge for a BM but can't pass stool, work from below. Insert a glycerin rectal suppository or use a fleet's enema. If the stool is still impacted you may need to be disimpacted rectally by a nurse or physician unless you can administer a high enema.

Mgt: If he has no pain or fever, I would advise providing hydration and a follow up visit. He should be able to drink without difficulty.
If he has signs of infection and/or pain,  I think that he should see a physician right away.

The issue is more...: More teamwork and evaluation with the primary care and gastrointestinal doctors are needed. A person with constipation needs to be sure there is no other disease causing it. If constipation is just due to slow movement of the food and poop through the gut, then the things to try are exercise, vegetables, prune juice, laxatives, etc. Colonoscopy may be needed. Doctor may try Linzess or Amitiza.

Consistency!: Take that MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) every day.  It is very safe.  It just pulls water into the colon.  Drink more water, and eat more fruits and veggies!  there is a new medicine out, linzess, which is like an "anti-depressant" for your colon.  Works great, in capsule form.  You never want to try to fix constipation, you want to prevent it, because it can truly cause many future health problems like diverticulosis.

Anatomy: Blockage is a medical emergency.  Rupture of the intestines, colon or even stomach can be life threatening. If you are moving stool you are probably not blocked, but constipated. There are a number of over the counter treatments for constipation.  If you are not moving stool and are having intolerable pain or are throwing up stool then please get to the er.

Not necessarily: See that you have irritable bowel syndrome. That can also change your stool presentation - they could be longer or more narrow. Please let your doctor know.

A variety of things: Rectal bleeding may be from hemorrhoids, fistula, fissure, cancer, infection or inflammatory conditions. If this has happened more than once or is associated with abdominal pain - please ensure you get a medical evaluation. Take care.

Problem needs fixing: Each person with constipation needs to be sure there is no other disease causing it. If constipation is just due to slow movement of the food and poop through the gut, then the things to try are vegetables, water, fiber with water, prune juice, prunes, polyethylene glycol, Senokot or other senna, milk of magnesia, other laxatives... A doctor can evaluate and consider meds like Linzess.
