Variable: There are many techniques and different expertise levels between surgeons, so the procedure can be quite variable. In general, a knee arthroscopy (or scope) is performed through small incisions. The old acl remnant is removed, tunnels are created at the site of the old acl. Then a tendon is placed within the tunnel to recreate the acl, which is fixed with screws, buttons, or anchors.

Rehab: It is normal to have some weakness immediately after acl reconstruction, which is why you will need to undergo a fairly long, rigorous rehabilitation program to regain strength and range of motion and balance.  Keep up with your rehab program and you should eventually recover normal strength of your leg.

Yes: If you have recovered fully after an acl reconstruction, you can train for and complete a marathon. Each surgeon has their own post-op protocols, but generally running straight is allowed around 4 months but cutting and jumping is not allowed until 6 months. However, most athletes report not quite being themselves for up to a year after surgery.

Depends: This depends on the limb that is injured and the other structures repaired. If your non-driving leg undergoes surgery, generally one can drive when able to get in and out of a car and when not adversely affected by pain medications from surgery (2-14 days). For  your driving leg, it depends on the restrictions pertinent to your individual repair and must be discussed with your doctor (7-28 days).

Like old acl: Allograft is tissue from a cadaver (dead person). The allograft is anchored in place where the old native acl was. It heals just like the old acl however it is non-native tissue. Allograft can be either hamstring, achilles tendon, patellar tendon, or quadriceps tendon.   In a young patient under 30 there is a higher re-rupture rate in acl reconstruction using allograft.

2-3 months.: Swelling following acl reconstruction is expected. It will go down over a 2-3 month time period gradually. You can ice the knee daily to help keep the swelling down.
