is it possible to have a sinus infection without nasal congestion or runny nose?

Accepted Answer

Yes: A sinus infection occurs when bacteria (most commonly) grow and create pain/pressure in one of the sinuses.  Many times, one of the ostia, the openings from the sinus into the nasal passages get plugged up for various reasons without typical sinsus symptoms.  Recently had a patient with severe sinusitis whose only symptom was a bad cough.  Otherwise felt fine.

Loss of taste: You are describing  loss of taste only, not smell. Usually, a sinus infection comes with congestion, nasal discharge, postnasal drip,  and loss of smell. Then, taste is secondarily affected. You have to get evaluated by your doctor and probably an ENT to look into your loss of taste.

Sinus infection: Not typically.  You can, but it would be unusual.  The symptoms we look for include nasal congestion, nasal discharge which is usually white, yellow, green or some other color of the rainbow.  The face can hurt or there is a lot of pressure in the face (usually the forehead or cheeks).  The teeth can hurt and you can develop a headache.  Many people will complain of fatigue/feeling run down/fever.

Possible: The sinuses can have polyps, infection, obstruction. 
Fever and facial pressure are common depending on the stage of the infection.

Yes: Chronic sinusitis can be a silent disease with flare ups, kind see an ENT specialist or an allergist/immunologist, if you have access to one, good luck

what can i do about the congestion that remains after sinus infection?

Accepted Answer

Decongestants: Behind-the-counter pseudo Ephedrine can help, if it doesn't make you jittery or keep you up at night. Nasal steroid sprays work the best; if this is a recurrent problem, your doctor can prescribe a one-month supply each time you take an antibiotic. If you get more than two sinus infections per year, see an allergist to find out what can be done to keep them from coming back.

i had a sinus infection back in august and since then ive had a constant drip and keep getting colds. today i woke up fine and then all of a sudden got hit with major congestion. what do you think is happening?

: It may be a reaction to an allergen. Try an OTC anti histamine. Good Luck

Neti pot: Consider using a neti pot. You can also add a drop or two of sski or lugol's to the salt water. Too much iodine can make it sting. Rinse sinuses twice daily or more if needed.
