Yes: Melatonin can be given to two year olds.  The question though is why do you want to?  Melatonin is a lousy sleeping pill;  it is a sleep cycle regulator, not a medicine used to induce sleep.  It is useful for helping to change bedtimes or for jet lag etc.  If you're trying to put your child to sleep, have you tried warm milk?  Chamomile?  Baths before bedtime?  Bedtime stories?

Melatonin: This is a very controversial topic. Your child should be assessed for any medical or behavioral disorder.  A bedtime routine should be in place. At the end of the day the solution may be melatonin. The appropriate dose has not been shown to be harmful. All the best.

i have a two year old daughter who has trouble sleeping at night. i was wondering if it is okay to give her melatonin on occasion?

Generally safe: You would have to talk to your pediatrician/fam med doct for specifics if she has medical conditions, but I have prescribed melatonin 0.5-1mg for children under 4.  You have to remember that this med should be taken when it gets dark outside.  Also there are typically other issues in 2 yr old like limit setting issues and sleep onset association problems that should be treated before meds.

Occasionally: But not recommended. Melatonin is a natural hormone and long term in young people can affect their growth hormone. I would be more interested in exploring his diet, bedtime routines, parental response to his sleep issues, medications, tonsils and adenoids, etc to see if we can determine  a cause for his sleep issues and address that.

Before trying: Before you try any over the counter remedies, you should definitely talk to a pediatrician.  Also, setting a night time ritual that encourages sleep is important.  TV's and electronics are stimulating so turning them off at least an hour before bedtime is essential for kids.

can my 2 year old have night time gripe water by mommys bliss to help with sleep? will it hurt her? she had it when she was younger for hiccups and colic, im just nervous about giving her melatonin, i trust the gripe water more.

Yes: The listed ingredients are innocuous. I doubt it would have any benefit beyond giving you something to do but consider it safe. Establishing a stable predictable night routine that allows the kid to wind down &amp; get ready for bed may be of help. No feeds at bedtime &amp; reading to her from a distance may help.

is liquid melatonin safe for a two year old autistic child who has problems going to sleep? i want to use an herbal treatment, this was recommended by a pediatrician, but have read articles stating not to do so....

At : At this time there are no guidelines for melatonin usage in individuals with autism spectrum disorders.  That being said, there are numerous studies showing that people with autism may in fact have lower levels of melatonin than the average person.  Multiple small studies have demonstrated that melatonin in small doses (2mg to 10mg), can benefit kids with autism who have trouble falling alseep or maintaining sleep.  Using melatonin for sleep is likely safer than any other sleep aid.

Without any other: information to go on, I can't answer that.  I strongly recommend that you call the American Association of Poison Control Center's Hotline at 800-222-1222.  They will ask you specific questions &amp; make a recommendation.  In any case, all of the members of your household need to keep their medication securely away from children at all times.

It's safe to try melatonin but I recommend a tiny dose of 0.25-0.5 mg. Magnesium (ideally glycinate or taurate) 200 mg/day may help calm him; also a good B-complex with the L-5-MTHF form of folate (folic acid). Tulsi tea and L-Thenanine may help.
