It is very low...: ...and somewhat dependent on the skill of the examiner/competence of the facility. About 1 in 200 people who have a colonoscopy have a serious complication: perforation of the colon (1/2000); bleeding 2.6/1000) and death (3/100,000 or 0.03%).  For almost everyone, but especially if you have a personal or family history of polyps/cancer, it is worth risk. Have one: if normal, you're probably done:)

Ask your doctors...: Ask your existing doctors if direct inspection with colonoscopy could be replaced by indirect means like digital camera endoscopy or modified imaging studies. Of course, the doctors and you together will consider the balance between medical necessities and professional possibilities.

Here are some...: Colonoscopy can usually &amp; safely be done under brief IV sedation, but can be deferred until severe electrolyte imbalance+heart disease are optimally corrected because colonoscopy oftentimes is non-urgent and even optional esp. at the time with serious ongoing medical issues. So, ask the treating doc so to understand the balance between medical necessity &amp; professional possibility before proceeding

Afib: The rhythm atrial fibrillation is not incompatible with a safe colonoscopy. Your dr. Performing the colonoscopy needs to know you have afib and what your treatment and other history is.

Not directly: The colonoscopy does not in any way look at the heart, only at the lining of your colon.  If a patient has issues during the test such as chest pain, irregular heart beat or hypotension, coronary artery disease may be considered, but different types of testing will be needed to verify.

No: Versed is not toxic to the heart. It can be used very safely for sedation when propey administered and monitored.

Sedation and DVT: All of the risks that you mentioned are possible with sedation but are extremely low and, at 33 years old, your risk  to develop any of them is a fraction of a percent.  The usual sedation for endoscopy and colonoscopy is conscious sedation which is the gold standard and works very well.

i had an egd for nausea and burping and chest burning in august 2022. nothing showed up. he did not see anything. i take prevacid and it has not really helped. have had heart tests, egd, colonoscopy. no reflux on egd. could this be symptoms of anxiet?

: It could be anxiety. But, there are other tests for reflux that can be done to be certain it is not reflux. If GERD is diagnosed, there are other meds that can be tried since Prevacid is not helping much. So, go back to your GI doctor for a follow up visit to see if he/she can test you further for reflux. Seriously sick: I understand you have a hemoglobin of 8 g/dL and the symptoms of anemia. Any competent physician can work up an anemia and you have a right to demand this, as well as a full explanation of how this is proceeding. Although iron deficiency from monthly loss is very common among women of your age, there are many other possible causes to rule out.

: You probably have functional dyspepsia and symptoms may resemble reflux symptoms. If your symptoms are relieved with antacids or gastric acid reducer, anxiety is less likely although functional dyspepsia can still be a psychosomatic disorder. Take care.
