i started having pain in my stomach. its the kind you get from doing too many sit ups. it hurts to cough, stand up, just sitting sometimes.  its just above my waist   could this be from having hernia surgeries ?

Yes: Chronic cough, as in smokers or those with longstanding lung disease, famously places a person at additional risk for hernia.

Increased pressure: A hernia is a hole in the abdominal wall through which the inner lining of the abdominal cavity, the peritoneum, may protrude through and create a sac.  This sac contains many pain fibers, and when irritated, can cause pain.  When one coughs, the pressure within the abdominal cavity is greatly increased, which tends to push the sac out, leading to the increased pain.

Push the hernia out: A hernia consists of a hole in the abdominal wall through which the inner lining of the abdominal cavity stretches out to create a sac.  Hernias may often be subtle and protrude only with increased activity.  Coughing increases the pressure within the abdominal cavity, thus "inflating" the sac to make it more prominent on examination.

Not Uncommon: Not Uncommon, unfortunately.  This is why laparoscopy is being used more and more for colectomies.

For you, it is time to get the hernia evaluated and repaired with mesh.  Consider laparoscopic approach, if possible.

i have an umbilical hernia and i have always been able to see it and feel it but now i can't see it or feel it unless i cough is that normal?

Yes: That is very normal.  The defect ("hole") doesn't disappear but the bulge (tissue coming through) may move in and out, making the hernia seem to change in size.  Cough will exacerbate the bulging.  The hernia should be fixed if you are healthy enough for surgery to avoid complications from it.

Possible: Hernia's are caused by abdominal wall defects. Coughing increases the pressure in the abdomen and may increase the chances that a hernia results. See your primary doctor, or urgent care for further examination.

i had surgery for an lingual hernia 4 weeks ago. i have noticed that it still looks like a hernia. i feel it when i cough or yell.  i think its still ?
