Yes: The main concern is mercury and the larger fish which eat the smaller fish concentrate the mercury and are more risky. Fortunately, lobster doesn't eat very large fish.

Accepted Answer

Yes: You can eat anything, but you have to do it in a well-balanced fashion and in moderation. You need to eat three meals a day, no snacks, and restrict your total caloric intake to less than you're burning off with exercise. It's 3500 calories to gain or lose a pound. You can even have butter -- but, you have to limit the amount of lobster eatenat one sitting, how often you eat it, and with what else.

May be fish allergy: You may have an allergy to finned fish.  Finned fish have different proteins then crustaceans and mollusks.  In addition, you may have noticed that you tolerate some finned fish but not others.  Symptoms of  fish allergy may include nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, hives or other swelling, and difficulty breathing within a short period, usually less than an hour, after eating the food.

i have had hives twice from crab in my adult life, but i regularly eat shrimp, lobster and fish. what is the unique characteristic of crab that the other types of seafood don't?

: Food allergies to seafood, particularly shellfish, are commonly due to a protein component of the shell which surrounds the flesh that is eaten.  Since shrimp and lobster contain different proteins they may not provoke the same reaction.  Some also postulate that the diet of the crab as a scavenger may contribute to this problem in some people as it tends to concentrate pollutants in the tissues.

Difficult to answer: Seafood includes shellfish and fish.  Shellfish includes mollusks and crustaceans.  You describe being able to eat a sea dwelling fish (tuna) and a crustacean (shrimp).  Therefore you are not allergic to seafood.  Lobsters and crabs are crustaceans and share the same allergy inducing protein tropomyosin. It does not appear you are allergic to that  or you would have had trouble with shrimp.

i am allergic to iodine, shrimp, lobster, seaweed, but can eat crab, fish clams, octopus. i would like to start taking fish oil  for depression. can i?

Allergy testing: It is unusual to be able to eat crabs and seafood with such a strong history of iodine and multiple seafood allergies.  I would not recommend fish oil at this time.  If you are depressed, there are medications and counseling that can help - see your Doctor.  If you have not been evaluated for specific food allergies, seeing an Allergist for testing is advised.
