is it possible to bleach away my birthmark?

Would Not Recommend: Bleaching birthmarks is a common practice, but often leads to potentially serious skin damage.  Birthmarks are due to special pigment cells in the deepest layer of our skin.  So bleaching or other topical agents--like lotions--generally do not work.  Please see a dermatologist for further information about birthmark removal.

hello great doctors out there! i was wondering if it is safe to use hair dye/bleach if one were born with a "birthmark" on head? i just self-researched on what type of birthmark i have and i guess i have the one called "nevus sebaceous". thank you?

See a dermatologist: There was a time in the not so distant past when all nevus sebaceous were removed because they were believed to be pre-cancerous.  That thinking is questionable now but still merits a visit to the expert in skin diseases.  Make sure you have what you think you have and get up to date treatment recommendations.  Get the care you deserve.

Yes: Many babies have birth marks and some, consisting of vascular lesions regress with time.  As long as the birthmark is stable and not bleeding, there is no cause for alarm.

Varies: Birthmark  is a term that applies to a broad group of different marks with different physical characteristics. Some are amenable to removal through laser treatments or surgery. Some would only leave a prominent scar if any attempt was made to remove it.Consultation with your pcp/a dermatologist or plastic surgeon could provide specific information on your situation.

Confusing question: Birthmark is a term applied to a variety of skin surface findings that are usually present at birth or within the first month or so. New patches/  growths/ spots that arise during puberty would not be considered birthmarks.

Accepted Answer

Some do some don't: There are a variety of red birthmarks that appear on babies. Their eventual status varies with type & location. The typical "storks bite" on the back of the neck persists through adulthood while "angel kisses" on the eye lids generally fade as the skin thickens. Strawberry marks increase in size & prominence for about a year before shrinking back & may fade considerably. Ask your dr for specifics.

Depends..........: The answer depends upon the location of the birthmark. Strawberry birthmarks in the midline of the body almost all resolve by around 5 years of age. Birthmarks lateral to the midline may not completely resolve without some help (laser, intralesional steroid injection, beta-blockers).This should, of course, be discussed with your child's physician.

Varies: Birthmark is a broad term that encompasses many different types of marks. Some can be removed surgically or lightened up with lasers or other treatments. Some are so extensive and fixed in place that no treatment would be advised.Location is also quite important to the treatment choices.Your pcp can direct you to a dermatologist with experience in the area.
